Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Physician-Supervised Blood Removal for Iron Reduction & Hematologic Health

At Haus of Health, we offer Therapeutic Phlebotomy as a medically supervised procedure for patients who have conditions in which reducing blood volume or excess iron stores is clinically indicated. Therapeutic phlebotomy is performed under the medical direction of Dr. Sarah Teodorski, NMD, following a comprehensive evaluation and review of laboratory findings.

Unlike donating blood, therapeutic phlebotomy is a prescribed medical treatment designed to help manage certain blood disorders and reduce the burden of excess iron or elevated red blood cell mass.

What Is Therapeutic Phlebotomy?

Therapeutic phlebotomy involves the controlled removal of a prescribed amount of blood to help reduce iron stores or decrease circulating red blood cells. The amount removed and the frequency of treatment are individualized based on your diagnosis, laboratory results, symptoms, and treatment goals.

Following the procedure, our clinical team monitors patients to ensure they remain well hydrated and recover comfortably before leaving the office.

Why We Perform Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Certain medical conditions can cause the body to accumulate excess iron or produce too many red blood cells. Over time, these abnormalities may increase the risk of complications and contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, joint discomfort, or impaired circulation.

Therapeutic phlebotomy may help support:

  • Healthy iron levels
  • Normal blood viscosity
  • Healthy circulation
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Management of specific hematologic disorders
  • Overall symptom improvement when medically appropriate

Treatment is always based on an individualized medical evaluation and evidence-based clinical guidelines.

Conditions That May Benefit

Therapeutic phlebotomy may be recommended for patients with conditions such as:

  • Hereditary Hemochromatosis
  • Secondary Iron Overload
  • Polycythemia Vera (in coordination with the patient’s hematologist when appropriate)
  • Secondary Polycythemia
  • Elevated Hematocrit
  • Elevated Ferritin associated with iron overload
  • Other physician-determined indications based on laboratory evaluation

Not every patient with elevated iron or blood counts requires phlebotomy. Our providers determine candidacy based on your complete medical history and diagnostic testing.

Comprehensive Evaluation Before Treatment

Before recommending therapeutic phlebotomy, our providers perform a thorough medical assessment that may include:

  • Comprehensive medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Ferritin levels
  • Iron studies
  • Transferrin saturation
  • Comprehensive metabolic testing
  • Review of current medications
  • Additional laboratory testing when indicated

This evaluation allows us to determine whether therapeutic phlebotomy is appropriate and to develop a safe, individualized treatment schedule.
